Sonamukhi (Cassia angustifolia)
Sevdi, also known as Sonamukhi or Indian Senna, thrives in the dry regions of Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Tamil Nadu, where sandy soil and warm winds nurture its growth. This well-known Ayurvedic herb is valued for its gentle yet effective cleansing action on the digestive system. The leaves of the Cassia angustifolia plant are traditionally used as a natural laxative, helping to relieve constipation and promote regular bowel movements.
In Ayurveda, Sonamukhi is recognised for its ability to clear excess Ama (toxic build-up) from the intestines, supporting the body’s natural detoxification process. When used in the right dosage, it aids digestion and promotes internal balance without causing weakness or fatigue.
In many households, Senna leaves are also brewed into herbal teas to support healthy digestion and relieve mild constipation.
Caution: Due to its strong purgative nature, excessive or prolonged use can cause abdominal cramps, dehydration, or dependency. It should be taken in moderation and under proper guidance, especially by children, the elderly, or individuals with chronic bowel conditions.
