Katuki (Picrorhiza kurroa)
Katuki is a small perennial herb that grows in the higher altitudes of the Himalayas, especially in Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. In Ayurveda, it is considered one of the most important herbs for liver and digestive health. The bitter rhizome (underground stem) is the part used in medicine, and it has been praised for centuries for its ability to cleanse and rejuvenate the body.
Katuki is best known for protecting the liver, improving bile flow, and supporting digestion. It is often recommended in conditions like jaundice, fatty liver, sluggish digestion, and chronic fevers. In classical Ayurvedic texts, Katuki is described as cooling and detoxifying, reducing excess pitta and cleansing the blood. It also supports skin health by removing toxins and helps regulate bowel movements with its mild laxative action. Because of its potency, Katuki is often used in smaller doses compared to other herbs.
Katuki is generally safe when used in the correct amount under professional guidance. However, because of its strong cleansing effect, large or unsupervised doses can lead to diarrhea, abdominal cramps, or dehydration. It should be avoided by pregnant women, children, and people who are weak or recovering from serious illness. Those with chronic liver or kidney disease should use it only under the strict care of an Ayurvedic doctor.
