Lodhra (Symplocos Bark) – Symplocos racemosa

Lodhra, or Symplocos Bark, is found in the forests of India, especially in Assam, Bihar, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, and the sub-Himalayan belt, where the tree grows well in moist, hilly terrain. In Ayurveda, Lodhra is especially valued as a stree-rogahara (supportive herb for women’s health) and for its astringent, cooling, and light qualities. Traditionally, it is used to regulate menstrual flow, manage excessive bleeding (rakta pitta), and support uterine health. It is also prescribed for wound healing, skin disorders, and digestive issues, owing to its ability to absorb excess moisture and reduce inflammation. Lodhra balances Pitta and Kapha doshas and is often included in classical formulations aimed at women’s health, eye disorders, and skin rejuvenation. In Indian households, its powder is sometimes used in traditional beauty remedies for clear skin.

Caution: While generally safe, excessive intake may cause constipation or dryness; it should be taken in moderation and under the guidance of an Ayurvedic physician, particularly for long-term use.
