Bhumyamalaki (Stonebreaker / Phyllanthus) – Phyllanthus niruri

Bhumyamalaki (Stonebreaker / Phyllanthus) – Phyllanthus niruri

Bhumyamalaki, also called Stonebreaker, grows abundantly in India’s tropical regions, especially in the states of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Andhra Pradesh, where it is often found as a small herb in fields and wastelands. In Ayurveda, it is highly regarded for its cooling, bitter qualities and is best known for supporting liver health and detoxification. Traditionally, Bhumyamalaki is used in conditions like jaundice, hepatitis, and other liver disorders, as it helps regulate bile secretion and purifies the blood. It is also valued for relieving urinary tract infections, dissolving kidney stones, and supporting healthy digestion by clearing Pitta and Kapha imbalances. Rich in natural compounds, it strengthens immunity and rejuvenates tissues. In many Indian households, simple decoctions of Bhumyamalaki are still used as home remedies for mild liver and urinary complaints.

Caution: Excessive or unsupervised use may aggravate Vata and cause mild digestive disturbances, so it should be taken in moderation and under Ayurvedic guidance, especially in chronic cases.
