Ela – Elettaria cardamomum

Ela supports digestion, soothes the gut, and refreshes the senses. It uplifts the mind while cooling and clarifying the breath.

Ela, also known as Green Cardamom, is one of the most aromatic and treasured spices in Ayurveda. Belonging to the Zingiberaceae (ginger) family, it is native to the evergreen forests of southern India, particularly in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, where it thrives in humid, shaded conditions. The small green pods of the plant — containing tiny, fragrant seeds — are used both as a culinary spice and a medicinal herb.

In Ayurveda, Ela is described as Madhura-katu rasa (sweet and pungent in taste) and Sheeta virya (cooling in potency). It balances Vata and Kapha doshas while gently stimulating Pitta in moderation. Traditionally, it is used to support digestion, freshen the breath, and cleanse the mouth. It is also valued for relieving nausea, easing bloating, and enhancing the flavour and digestibility of food.

Beyond the digestive system, Ela is known for its calming and heart-opening effects. It is used in Ayurvedic formulations to promote clarity of mind, soothe irritability, and support respiratory comfort. Cardamom is also believed to aid in detoxification and help eliminate excess mucus from the respiratory tract.

Modern research supports many of these traditional uses. Cardamom contains essential oils such as cineole and terpenes that contribute to its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. Studies suggest that regular use may support digestive enzyme function, help maintain healthy blood pressure, and promote oral and respiratory health.
